Building Performance Workshop
Lot 8 is a 2,500-square-foot, one-and-a-half-story single-family residence in the Chicagoland suburbs designed to become the third Passivhaus Institute Premium–certified home in the United States, setting a new benchmark for residential energy performance. The home is carefully oriented to maximize solar gain, allowing a rooftop photovoltaic array to generate significantly more power than a typical house of similar size, while high solar heat gain frameless glazing units are strategically placed to capture winter sunlight and reduce heating demand in the cold Midwest climate. Walls and roofs are insulated to over R-100, creating an exceptionally high-performance building envelope that ensures long-term durability, extreme energy efficiency, and a consistently comfortable living environment year-round.
